From Holiday Magic to a Green Solution: Arbressence Gives Christmas Trees a Second Life

The festive season has come to an end, but natural Christmas trees that brightened the homes of thousands of families are beginning a new chapter thanks to Arbressence. As part of the Greater Montreal natural Christmas tree recycling program, Arbressence proudly transforms these trees into valuable ecological resources.

In collaboration with over a dozen municipalities, more than 50,000 collected trees are delivered to Arbressence’s distillery in Blainville. Once shredded, the trees are placed into large metal vats where steam is injected to begin the distillation process. After a few hours, the essential oil of fir is extracted. This precious oil is used in the production of perfumes and pharmacological products. As for the remaining fir chips, they are sent to Arbressence’s partners in the agricultural sector, where they are used as eco-friendly filler.

An Inspiring Environmental Initiative

This large-scale recycling operation is made possible thanks to the collaboration of municipalities. Some cities offer a door-to-door collection service handled by Arbressence’s team, while others transport the trees directly to the distillery. Each year, this initiative diverts approximately 500 tons of trees from landfills. These winter operations align perfectly with Arbressence’s mission to promote the circular economy.

The Christmas tree recycling program runs throughout January and into part of February. To participate, citizens are encouraged to contact their municipality to check if Arbressence provides Christmas tree recycling services in their area.
