Our advice for beautiful cedar hedges

Step 1: Add bone powder (2 kg for 12 cedars) to the bottom of the pit. If your soil is sandy or gravelly, add peat moss, 1.25 m (4 ft) to 9 m (30 feet) in length. In the case of poor soil, add rabbit or sheep manure (15 kg for 4.5 m or 15 feet).

Step 2: Fill the pit with about 2 inches (5 cm) of water to make a mud at the bottom.

Step 3: Place the cedars in the pit and bury them, making sure to cover all the roots (Tip: let the hose run at half water flow in the pit during planting). Space the cedars as recommended at purchase.

Step 4: Using the garden hose, penetrate the soil through the roots to remove any air pockets that may be there, and remove the branches that have been buried in the ground.

Step 5: Now that the hedge is in place, straighten the trees so that the heads are all aligned. Add 2 liters of 10-52-10 transplanting fertilizer (120 ml or 8 tablespoons in 20 L (5 gal) of water) to the soil at the base of each tree.

Step 6: Make a cut of about 2.5 to 5 cm (1 to 2 inches) on each side of the hedge up to the top (the shape of the cone must be respected, never cut the square top).

Watering: During the first week, water daily for an hour if you are using a perforated hose. And, thereafter, a watering of one hour every three to four days for the rest of the summer (it is preferable to water at sunset to limit the evaporation due to the sun). Never full sun.
